Talat Noi

Talat Noi in Bangkok was an unexpected discovery within such a high-tech, fast-paced city. This historic neighborhood is home to ethnic Chinese communities that have lived there since Bangkok’s founding. As part of the larger Chinatown district, Talat Noi draws both locals and tourists for its preservation of traditional speech, food, and folk beliefs. It is considered one of the oldest parts of Bangkok, with a history stretching back more than 200 years.

Originally settled by Chinese immigrants, the area has long been a diverse community, welcoming people of various nationalities and religions, including Thai, Vietnamese, and Portuguese residents. A distinctive feature of the neighborhood is its dense network of workshops and junkyards selling old car and motorcycle parts, creating an atmosphere marked by rust, metal, and a sense of industrious history. When I visited, locals were celebrating a holiday, dressed in all white, they explained it was a time for eating and sharing sweets.
