On a rain-soaked street, women cross the Merkato beneath umbrellas, their reflections shimmering below. The overcast sky and dreary surroundings flatten the light, allowing their movement, the colors of their clothes and umbrellas and their reflections on the ground to become the primary source of light.
The Merkato is Ethiopia’s largest open-air marketplace, and even during the rainy season (Kiremt), the city moves forward steadily. The image represents resilience and determination in everyday tasks, despite discomfort.
